Due to the breakaway of the Premier League in , winning the Football League title no longer makes a team the top tier champions of English football.
Includes Premier League titles. The Football League Play-offs are used as a means of determining the final promotion place from each of the league's three divisions.
This is a way of keeping the possibility of promotion open for more clubs towards the end of the season.
The format was first introduced in , after the decision was made to reduce the top flight from 22 to 20 clubs over the next two seasons; initially, the play-offs involved the team finishing immediately above the relegation places in a given division and the three teams who finished immediately below the promotion places in the division below — essentially one team was fighting to keep their place in the higher division while the other three teams were attempting to take it from them.
In , this was changed—instead of teams from different divisions playing each other, the four teams below the automatic promotion places contested the play-offs.
The first season of this arrangement saw the final being contested in home and away legs. The four teams play-off in two semi-finals and a final, with the team winning the final being promoted.
Originally the semi-finals and the final were all two-legged home-and-away affairs, but from onwards the final is a one-off match.
It is in this format that the play-offs continue today. A proposal to have six teams rather than four competing for the final place was defeated at the league's AGM in Since the League has accepted lucrative sponsorships for its main competition.
Below is a list of sponsors and the League's name under their sponsorship:. After the formation of the Premier League the newly slimmed-down football League 70 clubs until and 72 clubs since renamed its divisions to reflect the changes.
The financial health of its clubs had become perhaps the highest League priority due to the limited resources available. However, there were some promising signs for the future, as the League planned to announce new initiatives beginning with the —05 season, coinciding with the start of a new sponsorship agreement with Coca-Cola.
The League's cup competitions have had different sponsors. The current sponsor Sky Bet commissioned a suite of trophies for the league from silversmith Thomas Lyte.
The other major source of revenue is television. The s saw competition between terrestrial broadcasters for the rights to show League matches, but the arrival on the scene of satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting Sky TV , eagerly searching for attractive programming [ clarification needed ] to build its customer base and willing to pay huge sums, changed the picture entirely.
The League's top-tier clubs had been agitating for several years to be able to keep more of the League's revenue for themselves, threatening to break away and form their own league if necessary.
In the threat was realised as the First Division clubs left to establish the FA Premier League and signed a contract for exclusive live coverage of their games with Sky TV.
The FA Premier League agreed to maintain the promotion and relegation of three clubs with The Football League, but The League was now in a far weaker position — without its best clubs and without the clout to negotiate high-revenue TV deals.
It covers Football League, League Cup and Football League Trophy matches and the full range of media: terrestrial and pay television, broadband internet, video-on-demand and mobile services.
Sky will provide the majority of the coverage and the BBC broadcast 10 exclusively live matches from the Championship per season and the semi-finals and finals of the League Cup.
In May , it was announced that Talksport had secured exclusive national radio rights to the English Football League.
Mark Clemmit continued to host the show as TradePoint came on board in the —14 season to be the title sponsor of the newly re-branded 'Football League Radio'.
The programme is now produced by digital production studio, Engage Sports Media. The Football League Board meets monthly and consists of two independent directors, three directors representing the Championship, two representing League One, and one representing League Two.

Support for such a league came from Alan Hardaker , the long serving Secretary of the Football League. He suggested that an amalgamation of the two strongest lower leagues in England, the Northern Premier League and the Southern League would reduce the number of candidates applying to join the Football League under the re-election system then in use.
It was also thought it would enable the strongest non-league candidate to emerge. In the Northern Premier and Southern Leagues agreed to only put forward one candidate each for election to the League and this proved successful with Wimbledon F.
Several Northern Premier sides who might have taken part in the new competition did not do so.
Goole Town F. Matlock Town F. Southport F. Barrow and Northwich had previously been members of the EFL. Barrow failed re-election in , while Northwich resigned from the league in Barnet, Boston, Maidstone, Scarborough and Yeovil have also tasted EFL football since the formation of the National League, but are now back in the National League or its feeder leagues Scarborough and Maidstone now in new incarnations.
Of the 20 founder members, the last to leave the fifth level were Northwich. They were relegated in , a year after the demise of Telford.
Barnet are the only founder member who have remained in the top five levels continuously since Bangor City has since moved to the Welsh football league system , while AP Leamington, Maidstone, Nuneaton, Scarborough, and Telford later collapsed and were reconstituted in lower English leagues.
The National League had a single division for the first 25 years of its existence, but since the —05 season has consisted of three divisions.
The original division was renamed Conference National currently National League and two new regional divisions one level down were introduced, Conference North and Conference South currently National League North and South.
Two teams have won the National League three times: Barnet , , and Macclesfield Town , , Prior to Barnet's and Macclesfield's third title wins, five other clubs had also become champions twice: Altrincham , , Enfield , , Kidderminster Harriers , , Maidstone United , , , and Stevenage Borough , Kidderminster also finished second in and Lincoln City became the seventh club to win the National League twice , , but subsequent to Barnet's third title.
Only Barnet was promoted to the EFL on all three occasions; Maidstone's first title came before the era of automatic promotion, while Kidderminster Harriers, Macclesfield Town and Stevenage Borough were denied promotion because their grounds were not up to the required standard at the time of their first win.
However, all three were promoted when they took their second title. Altrincham are the only team in history to retain the title, as at the time there was no automatic promotion to the EFL.
The first five of them have since returned to the League, Luton and Orient by winning the title, and the three others by winning the playoff finals.
Additionally Luton and Oxford are the only clubs to have played league matches against each other in all top five tiers of English football.
Bradford Park Avenue also played in the First Division in its previous incarnation, however their current incarnation has only reached as high as the North division.
As a consequence, there was no guarantee that winning the National League would result in promotion, and none of the league's first eight champions were promoted.
This changed in , when automatic promotion and relegation between the Football League Fourth Division and the National League was agreed.
The first clubs affected by the new system were Lincoln City, who were relegated and replaced by Scarborough.
